Day 57 – July 27

So we passed from Wisconsin to Illinois to Indiana today. Our journey around Chicago was long. How long was it? It was so long, we melted away to a shadow of our former selves. Oof. The major highway we wished to take was backed up for 20+ miles. Google cooperated with us today and helped us to navigate away from from the mayhem and into the country side where we passed miles of farms and car dealerships. While we could have rejoiced with its familiarity with Business Rt. 1 in Pennsylvania, instead we cursed fate that took us away from snow capped mountains and roads with s-shaped curves.

And when later we found ourselves in yet another Wyndam chain motel, we beat our chests and cried that we are tired of living in hotels. So what were we to do? We drank vodka and ate Doritos to comfort ourselves. Clearly, we are stuck in purgatory.

Many of you will think that we are nervy and ungrateful. Well we are, dammit. So we will turn down the air conditioning at the Microtel and go to sleep.

The end of a trip is never so exciting as its beginning.

Good night!

Nearly home…soon you will be sleeping in your own bed.
The ending of a trip is tough.

Hope you two are home now. I don’t know if you remember me, I met you guys at the southern visitors center of Theodore Roosevelt NP. We took our time visiting the park & came upon several bison, a pack of 5 or 6 wild horses & plenty of prairie dogs. After our visit to the southern park we high tailed it to the northern park and we treated with an close view of a small bison herd & one male bison growling like a lion. It was a great experience. Just wanted to drop you a line to say hello. I can wait to read about the earlier parts of your trip.
    Best Wishes,
    Sandy W.

Hi! Of course we remember you. We so enjoyed our conversation. The three of you certainly got the most out of your time at the Park. We also saw some bison and horses and prairie dogs by the thousands 😃. But we heard no growls or grunts or other gutturals. We think it’s so neat that your boy is enthusiastic about the junior ranger program. That will yield a life time of memories, and not a few “oh, dear, there he goes again!” stories for his kids.
We got home this past Monday and promptly oozed off the bike. We were plenty worn out in such a good way. It’s also good to sleep in our own bed and drink our homemade coffee and tend to the house after two months. (Maybe not the lawn.)
We hope to do this kind of trip again some time. The riding is wonderful, to be sure. But meeting wonderful people like you all makes it spectacular. Thank you so much for getting in touch. We’d love to keep in touch, and hear how your boy (sorry, what’s his name?) makes out.
Be well and pass our regards on to your husband and Sir Ranger. Connie and Hank
